The Tatkal scheme of Indian railways was introduced to help the
Indian Railways pessengers to book ticket in case of emergencies.

Indian Railways Obstructiveness

Indian RailwaysI had recently booked a train ticket from www.irctc.co.in for Delhi - Jammu - Delhi in 3-tier AC. Due to heavy rush my return ticket was on waitlist and did not get confirmed even on the traveling date. I could not check the status of the ticket and checked it at the Jammu station only as I had just returned straight from my visit to Maa Vaishnodevi Bhawan and Patnitop (I’ll write about the details of the visit soon). I went to reservation counter if the ticket could be cancelled as it was still on waiting list. They guy on the counter told me as this is a ticket booked from internet you need to cancel it from there and the payment you made will be credited to your credit card/debit card account.

When I reached Delhi next day I tried to cancel the ticket from internet, it alerted that this ticket cannot be cancelled from internet as this is i-ticket. Then I checked on the site for more details and found that e-ticket (which you print at your end can be cancelled but i-ticket which is sent to you as a normal railways printed ticket cannot be cancelled online.)

I called up customer care and briefed them about the issue and was told to take this ticket to any computerised booking center, from there you get your ticket cancelled and you will be given TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt), which further needs to be sent to Chief Commercial Manager, Northern Railways via normal post and then your account will be credited.

My father went to the nearest booking center and was told this kind of cancellation is only done at window no.18 at New Delhi railway station. He went there and got the TDR after standing in queue for 2 hours.

After having gone through such a horrid time and still money is not being refunded. What Indian Railways need to understand that passengers book tickets online because they want to avoid queues and are short of time. They need to have some respect for time of their customers. If they could make cancellation of e-tickets online, it should not be that difficult to do the same for i-tickets. Just hoping Mr. Laloo Prasad and his ministry tries to improve their system of working to cause customers less agony and keep them happy but Indian Railways is a monoply anyways…nobody bothers , customers don’t have a choice.

They also should give an option to customer to book return ticket online at the same time when they are booking their ticket for going to a place. The customer should be charged for courier charges once and should be sent tickets in one courier rather than sending tickets seperately. There mismanagement is causing loss to public and unacceptable gains for courier company.

With the help of the Trains At A Glance and the various Zonal Timetables published by the Indian Railways, along with regular atlases.

I also acknowlege the encouraging help received from various IRFCA members especially relating to current developments.

Here it finally is. The map I worked pretty hard for. Essentially what I did is took the TAAG map as a reference and then added in all the details from the zonal TT maps, added in other information culled from other sources, and finally had a good look at what felt missing and added that in.

Indian Railways (Hindi: भारतीय रेल Bhâratîya Rail), abbreviated as IR (भारे), is the state owned railway network of India. Ministry of Railways is responsible for the operation, maintenance and growth of the rail network in India, the 5th largest network in world in terms of track length.[2] The railway ministry is headed by a cabinet rank Railways Minister, while the Department is managed by the Railway Board. Indian Railways is neither a private nor a public corporate body; however recently it has adopted a corporate managementstyle. IR has a total state monopoly on India's rail transport. It is one of the largest and busiest rail networks in the world, transporting eighteen million passengers daily[3] and more than two million tonnes of freightdaily.[4] IR is the world's largest commercial or utility employer, with more than 12 million employees.[5] The railways traverse the length and breadth of the country; the routes cover a total length of more than 63,327 km (39,500 miles). As of 2008, IR owned about 225,000 wagons, 45,000 coaches and 8300 locomotives and ran more than 18,000 trains daily, including about 8,984 passenger trains and 9,387 goods trains.[4] Railways were first introduced to India in 1853. By 1947, the year of India's independence, there were forty-two rail systems. In 1951 the systems were nationalised as one unit, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates both long distance and suburban rail systems.

IRCTC is in charge of catering services on trains and railway stations across India. Depending on the distance covered by the train and average passenger load factor, the railways either equips trains with their own pantry cars or provides meals at select stations en route.

[edit]Online ticketing

IRCTC is better known for changing the face of railway ticketing in India. It pioneered Internet-based rail ticket booking through its website, as well as from mobile phones via GPRS or SMS. Ticket cancellations or modifications can also be done online. In addition to E-tickets, IRCTC also offers I-tickets that are basically like regular tickets except that they are booked online and delivered by post.

Commuters on Mumbai's suburban railway can also book season tickets through the IRCTC website.

IRCTC has also recently launched a loyalty program called "Shubh Yatra" for frequent travellers. Through this program, passengers can avail of discounts on all tickets booked round the year by paying an upfront annual fee.[1]

[edit]Tourism

IRCTC also organizes budget and deluxe package tours for domestic and foreign tourists. A popular tourism package for budget tourists covering important tourist destination across India is Bharat Darshan.[2] Luxury tourism packages are also available, that involve special luxury trains such as:
